Solid Colonial Wool Top FiberAshland Bay offers roughly two-dozen variations of bright and vibrant, Solid Colonial Wool Top dyed fiber for spinning. Solid Colonial color ways are nature inspired. Our Colonial Wool Top is produced with South American Corriedale Wool. The wool is 27.5 Microns and has an average staple of 90mm (approx. 3.5 inches). This strong, durable wool has next to skin comfort while being versatile enough for any outer garment. When we first started importing wool top over 20 years ago, there were several companies promoting Australian and New Zealand sheep breeds. We chose to concentrate on British breeds. The first dyed top we stocked was the Colonial line. When we first started stocking this top, it was not breed specific, it was spec specific: 27.5 micron, 3 ½ inches, 90mm staple length. The Colonial name came about when we asked the dye house where the wool came from and they listed several countries, most were part of the old British Empire, thus the Colonial name. Now the wool comes from South America and is Corriedale. |
